I used to not care about skincare...
I don’t write about skincare much, but it’s another aspect of health that shouldn't be overlooked. Skincare products are one of the main sources of toxins we encounter in our lives, and every day we see the negative effects of toxin overload in the lives of our clients. We help them heal from this, and it can be a long journey which is why it prompts me to want to encourage you to eliminate as many toxins as you can, and starting with skincare is a great first step. We buy too many expensive, chemically-laden skincare products and slather them on our skin without blinking an eye.
The truth of the matter is that what we put ON our bodies ends up IN our bodies. Since our body absorbs what we put on our skin, skincare products, just like food and supplements, should be of the highest quality.
My 2014 Resolution:
So last year, I made it a New Year’s Resolution to transition to using more natural products for my skin and hair. I found myself starting to read ingredient lists on not only the stuff I put in my body (food), but also the stuff I put on my body (products). As I started transitioning away from the products I had been using that were full of questionable ingredients (toxins and chemicals), I found myself a little frustrated. Chemical-free products are hard to find, especially ones that smell good (I’m a sucker for scents!), so I’ll be honest and say this journey, while rewarding, has been a tad boring. My solution was using tons of coconut oil. Since it’s so versatile, I used it as a makeup remover, lotion, hair conditioner, shaving cream...and of course, to cook my eggs!
So, I looked into some “natural” skincare lines, but was super skeptical. How do you know if the ingredients are actually natural? (A term that’s pretty meaningless.)
How I discovered the skincare products I now use:
When I was in Florida in January, I met Kevin Gianni and we connected right away. He’s one of those kindred-spirit, genuine guys you just know you can trust. He shared his wife’s amazing skin care line with me and I was instantly hooked. For me, within just a few days of using the Annmarie Skin Care line, I noticed that my skin felt like fine satin. I finally got that healthy glow that made me look so refreshed and rejuvenated! … and even after long, stressful days at work, too. And I kid you not, these products smell heavenly! I’m very particular about smells and this is that right subtle and relaxing scent that just makes me feel pampered every time I use it. I love the ingredient list, the mission behind the company and will never forget the feeling when I first tried it- I was literally giddy! I still love using coconut oil (I use this brand) but it's nice to have variety, and I do like having specific products for specific purposes.
My daily skincare routine:
My skincare routine now is the Aloe Herb Facial Cleanser to wash my face, then I apply the Anti-Aging Serum all over, and Eye Cream under and around my eyes. On days when I prefer lighter coverage (i.e. not for TV segments, but for everyday wear), I've been using their Earth Minerals makeup, and throughout the day I spray the Toner Mist as a refresher. It's become my favorite habit, especially on these hot days! I also use the Coconut Honey mask once or twice a week.
I use their natural sun protection, too. Most sunscreens sold today contain harmful ingredients, like oxybenzone which can cause hormone disruption and skin reactions—not good! Theirs is made with organic real food ingredients like avocado and coconut. It leaves your skin moisturized, nourished and does its job of protecting your skin from the sun. And for those who like to use bronzer, it works for this too, and it's safe to use on your face! I’ve been using this line for six months now and can't imagine going back to the junk I was using before.
I also take supplements to help support my skin:
- SynerVive™: I take this for hormonal balance, and most females will notice improvements in their skin when they are taking this if the root cause of their skin issues are hormonal. I take two to four a day depending on the time of the month.
- My daily gut health supplements support skin health because when things aren't healthy on the inside, there's a good chance it'll reflect on the outside. In fact, most skin issues (that we're given a cream, pill or potion for) are a result of poor gut health. If you have too many bad bacteria living in there, inflammation occurs and shows up on your skin. Healing the gut is a great starting point for almost all health issues, including the skin.
- Acnutrol: Helps to calm inflammation by focusing on the internal healing process and overall skin health. I typically recommend four to six per day for those with chronic skin conditions, such as eczema, rosacea and acne.
- Collagenics: a comprehensive blend of vitamins and nutrients that support collagen and connective tissue (in the skin). I take one to two a day, and might recommend three for those with existing skin issues.
So there you have it. Cheers to clear, youthful skin and exciting, natural products!
